Ok, have to set parameters on this, cause “old school” for some of my friends means 2003! (No hate, i’m just old.)
To qualify for this list it had to be released before 1995, or to make it easier it would have to be able to appear on this…
So here’s my Top 5, in no particular order…
Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock / Get On The Dance Floor: Yes I know, when you think of Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock you think Joy & Pain or It Takes Two. But this is the my fav from them. Smooth Michael Jackson sample, good vibe, loved playing this in the clubs!
De La Soul / Me Myself & I: They were all about peace and harmony. Pretty much started the “alternative hip hop” movement with Black Sheep, Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers and more… This song addressed the people in the rap world who called them “hippies”.
Heavy D & The Boyz: What drew me to this song was Heavy D’s speed. At that moment in time, no one was faster lyrically! And it is just got a great groove…
Public Enemy / Fight The Power: No Old School list is complete without Public Enemy. This song, and the movie “Do The Right Thing” was highly influential on me and my understanding on how the world really works. I knew what racism was, but this gave me a better understanding of the “depths” of frustration that exists (and still does) in the world around me.
Beastie Boys / So What Cha Want: Yes, License to Ill was HUGE for me, but when this came out you KNEW they weren’t a flash in the pan. The masses were disappointed, but for a music geek like me, this was gold!
West Coast Rap All Stars / We’re All In The Same Gang: Unbelievable song, a message that was so needed at this moment in time. It was produced by Dr. Dre, the song featured rhymed lyrics from the following: King Tee, Body & Soul (including Dee Barnes), Def Jef, Michel’le, Tone-Loc, Above the Law, Ice-T, Dr. Dre, MC Ren and Eazy-E of N.W.A, J.J. Fad, Young MC, Digital Underground (Money-B and Shock G), Oaktown’s 3.5.7, MC Hammer
ABC/Playground, Chubb Rock/Treat Em Right, Ice T/New Jack Hustler, Kid & Play/Rollin With Kid & Play, Kool Moe Dee/I Go To Work, LL Cool J/Jingling Baby, Mellow Man Ace/Mentirosa, Run DMC/It’s Tricky, Young MC/Bust A Move
