Desensitized To Hate?

This image just makes me cringe. Why would someone be proud to have someone hate them?

Is this is where we are now? Let’s poke the other guy with a stick and say “It’s not that my views are better, but wait, THEY ARE BETTER because they cause you to hate me?”

How does someone hating you benefit you? Is there a return on that investment? I can’t get my head around it, it actually feels like a weight dragging on my soul when I see something like this…

On April 10th in Milwaukee a “woman was walking home from morning prayers at the Islamic Society of Milwaukee about 6 a.m. Monday when a car pulled up next to her. A man got out of the car and demanded she remove her hijab. When she refused, the man pulled her to the ground, stomped on her head and slashed her clothing with a knife.” Why? What was she doing? Walking down a street? What makes a person think it’s ok to do this to another human being? (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

Then there’s this?

These eggs were found in a west Austin neighborhood, spread out on Saturday night so they would be in people’s yards on Easter morning… Yes they say 18 and older, but what possesses someone to fill Easter eggs with information which “included advertisements for podcasts and other websites that promote discriminatory content.” You know kids are gonna run, pick them up and see what’s inside! 18 and older??? Please!! The pamphlet also has a call to “secure the future for white children.” (CBS Austin)

I read an article from John Pavlovitz today that really hit home with me… Hateful People Are Exhausting . Now I don’t agree with everything John writes, but this article is right on point. (Some strong language, but important to have context to what he is talking about.) I get tired, beat down as I watch things that are said on my social feeds. I cringe at statements made in front of me by strangers at the grocery store, by friends and associates in social settings, or even at church a time or two over the last several months…

He uses the words exasperated, drained, fatigued, weary… Weary is a really good word, I am weary of what is happening right now…

There has been so much talk over the years about how violence on TV and video games have desensitized us to violence in our culture?  So here’s my big question…

Have the last 2 to 3 years brought us to a place that we are becoming desensitized to hate in our lives and the world around us?

Chew on that… Take a moment and let that thought sink in…

Is hate becoming the norm? Is it becoming socially acceptable to OPENLY hate someone for the color of their skin, their nationality, what they believe in, who they love or what they stand for? Have we past the point where respect and disagreement can go hand in hand? Can you judge someone without any knowledge of their personal story and struggles? Can a stereotype really hold that much power over a person’s thoughts, beliefs and actions?

And it sure feels like it’s found it’s way into the news organizations, our local and national governments, our schools and sad to say even some of our churches…

John 15:12
This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

Pavlovitz wrote something that brought tears to my eyes at the end of his article…”I will be a person of love here (on Earth) or I will die trying.”  I think that’s gonna be my personal mission statement for the foreseeable future… (and I pray that it is yours)

  1. Amen to this! I do feel our society is absolutely becoming desensitized to SO many things…hate, sex, violence, apathy…yuck! And I can relate to that feeling of weariness that you describe. It is a struggle. BUT – let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9. I’m with you – I’m not giving up – I will continue to LOVE each and every person that I can during my short time here on Earth… <3. <3.
