It was a “B-Side”, but she was beautiful! (A year later)

Already a year… Still kinda hurts doesn’t it? Here’s what I wrote almost a year ago…

There has been millions of words written about Prince since the news came last Thursday that he was gone…

I remember pulling that 12 inch record out of the rack…

His influence and impact on music is far-reaching… His musical talent, undeniable…

It’s a B side though… 115 BPM…

Controversial, yes… Offensive, for some more than others… He is one of the “15” that got warning labels put on records and cds…

This will sound great coming out of Pump Up The Volume by MARRS…

But there were also many songs about real life issues (Sign of The Times), love (The Most Beautiful Girl in The World) and yes even God (The Cross) that made you think, feel and move something inside you…

Take it out of the sleeve, and put it on the table…

He ruled MTV! He was even a movie star! Purple Rain was HUGE, I also loved Under A Cherry Moon (don’t hate)…

Find the break, get the beats lined up, find that sweet spot 16 measures later…

He broke industry rules, fought for artists rights, tried to break down the wall between artist and fans way before YouTube and Soundcloud existed…

The slider moves left to right… Bam! Right on that cymbal crash…

He was an influence on past, present and future generations of artists… From Eric Clapton to Drake, from Bruce Springsteen to Justin Timberlake and even from Darius Rucker to Chris Stapleton… Did you know he even wrote a song for Kenny Rogers?

And was a HUGE influence on me… My first “album cut” I ever put on the radio was The Morning Papers at Power Hits K-106 in Beaumont… Drove Mark Landis crazy till I got it on…

Wow, look at that girl moving fast to the dance floor, she loves this song… and she’s beautiful!

Prince is in my DNA, he’s part of my life, part of my make up… Because Prince’s Hot Thing was the first time I saw her… Kelly White… My future wife, which I didn’t know it at the time… But what I did know was that when Kelly and Chrissie (her best friend) were there, I could always get the dance floor going with a Prince record! And I am not gonna lie, I loved watching her dance…

We can talk all about his jaw dropping performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, all his accolades, his fight against WB records, his reclusive lifestyle, his worldwide following, his effect on fashion, his soaring record sales over the last 6 days…All of it…

I can tell you 20 more stories about my personal experience, about seeing him on New Years Eve at The Summit, about hearing DMSR/Delirious/Let’s Pretend We’re Married and realizing I was “getting away” with something as a 12 year old boy, about watching him do half time at The Super Bowl with my jaw on the floor, about the One Night Only Tour (piano, trap set and stand up bass greatest hits set), about hearing Musicology for the first time and my mind just blown away…

But I just can’t get the movie out of my head, NOTHING compares to that moment, nothing has had the impact on my life like when that slider moved from left to right, and I saw her for the very first time. But isn’t that what music is supposed to do, mark those moments, so we can relive them forever…

Thank you Prince… thank you very much!
