The moment where Emma Watson becomes the movie star everyone knows, instead of the awesome actress some of us know…
Yes you know her from Harry Potter, and as that movie series progressed, she became the best actor out of the 3 in my opinion. It was like watching NSync as they came along, couple of the guys could have careers, but you knew Justin Timberlake was the star.
Emma has put together a string of powerful roles in smaller movies. The Bling Ring, This is The End, Noah and my favorite The Perks of Being A Wallflower. In Wallflower, she just ate up the screen in scene after scene. On the back of that truck screaming to David Bowie, it was like John Cusack with that radio up high in Say Anything. If you haven’t seen it, rent it, it’s like The Breakfast Club for this generation. (IMO)
Now, this movie is very very good! They kept what was important about the cartoon, showed respect to the pieces that “could not be touched”, Be Our Guest, The Dance to Beauty and The Beast (yes, Mrs Potts sings it), The Flower, Gaston’s song. These are all things they could have tried to “make better” but they didn’t, they stuck to the original and just made it work in the live setting.
The one new addition that really stood out for me was The Beast singing Evermore. Such a powerful song and performance… Dan Stevens sings this with such intensity and pain, and it is filmed in such a way that just crushes your heart…
Wasting in my lonely tower, Waiting by an open door
I’ll fool myself she’ll walk right in
And as the long, long nights begin, I’ll think of all that might have been
Waiting here for evermore!
They also capture the comedy of the original as well. Gaston and LeFou, Luke Evans and Josh Gad, have perfect chemistry and timing throughout the movie. There was one line that I laughed out loud, the kind of laugh that other people laugh around you because you laughed that loud…
Gaston: That’s what makes Belle so appealing—she hasn’t made a fool of herself to gain my favor. What do you call that?
The support players Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Stanley Tucci, Emma Thompson, famous opera singer Audra McDonald are all top notch! And it’s been a while since we have seen Kevin Kline in something this good! We need to see him more, he is brilliant in this role.
The cinematography, costumes, backgrounds & sets are all on point! Not once did the CGI take me “out of the experience”. Considering one of the main characters is mostly CGI, it was well crafted and well executed!
See the movie! Then get some kids, yours or your friends, doesn’t matter and see it again!
