6 Years and One Day, Boo Yah! and a Puff of Smoke!

Time is something that is top of mind as we all start the new year… The “passing of time” is something that I have been really feeling as we roll into the start of 2015…

Today marks my 6th anniversary with Capitol/EMI Nashville… Today is also officially the longest I have ever stayed at one job in my whole career… 13.5% of my life has been spent with not only some of the most talented artists ever in Country music, but also fellow staff members and bosses who I have been lucky enough to go into “battle”, work alongside, learn from, occasionally disagree with and call my friends… And a quick thanks to Mike Dungan, Jimmy Harnen and Steve Hodges for hiring me 6.1 years ago after the worst interview in the history of interviews, (but that’s a story for another time)…

My son Liam just gave up 4 days of his vacation to serve at a youth church leadership camp. Serving kids HIS age… And when I say serve I mean he fetched them drinks, made them coffee, got them food when they were hungry. He was responsible for their needs so they could focus on the speakers and the lessons being taught… He was living out “being Jesus” in a small but very real way to his peers…

My 15 year old boy is becoming a man right before my eyes, and it’s an absolute joy but also painful at the same time… I want my “boy” back sometimes, but I am also so proud of the man he is becoming. 5 months till 16!

Faith, in a very small way, made me realize time is moving fast… 2 weeks off of school, and she didn’t “go out and play”, not once! It didn’t hit me till the last couple of days of vacation. I even asked her about it, and she very respectfully responded “Dad, I don’t really go out and play anymore…”  Where did my little girl go…?

I am lucky because she still wants hugs from her daddy, even though we joke about “ew! affection!”. But I truly value each and every one of them… Cause I know time is moving, and those hugs will change with time…

The kids didn’t put out cookies and milk out for Santa, they didn’t even mention it… First year in 15 of them that we didn’t take a trip to the toy store… Didn’t open gifts till 2pm and their heads didn’t explode… Liam was interested in some of Faith’s gifts, and Faith was interested in some of Liam’s! No Dick Clark on New Years Eve… 😦

And what got me typing was the news that Stuart Scott (Boo Yah!) passed away yesterday… When he spoke at the Espy’s this year, receiving the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance, he said this… “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.”

This is an amazing inspirational statement… I remember watching this on the Espys months ago, and was just blown away by his strength in the face of cancer that was relentless in his life… He was only 49 when he passed away…But re-watching it yesterday, it spoke to me directly…

How you live…

Why you live…

The manner in which you live…

Change those into questions, and you have some serious soul-searching…

How do you live?

Why do you live?

What is the manner in which you live?

Can you answer these questions? Amazing how just adding 3 little words changes the scope of that statement… I would guess a “younger” version of me would answer those questions quite differently than the person typing today…

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (‭Matthew‬ ‭22‬:‭37-39‬)

This has been my “go to” answer to the “what I believe” question… And I came to realize today, it also answers all 3 of the questions above… I know the answers, but I can’t say I answer them correctly every day… But as time goes on, 45 years and counting, I feel the urgency to get them right more and more… Why…? Life is short…

You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? For you are a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes. (James 4:14)

I urge you to take the time and watch this… Inspiring…

  1. very well said John!! It’s borderline frightening how fast time goes. It’s been 12 years since I battled cancer. Stuart Scott was truly an insperation to me! I have learned there are far more important things in life than adds and convertions and that is health, family, and friends!!

Sign me up….Oh: and glad you have an Av’s jersey!!!!!!!
